A Bollywood movie on the search for love and romance Love, like its universal symbol, is represented in many facets of life. In the West it is marked by a diamond engagement ring or a wedding ceremony, while in India it is marked by an evergreen tree that stands eternal. Mehbooba too paints a similarly variegated outlook with its exploration of love and romance. The film opens with a close-up shot of a heart being pierced by an arrow before cutting to college sweethearts, Nazia-Eid (Anushka Sharma) and Haroon Sheikh (Naseeruddin Shah). The pair too run into a love-triangle of sorts when Nazia finds herself in love with a man called Manzoor (Shehryar Zaidi) who is not the same as Haroon. In the course of events, Nazia finds herself in a dilemma when she finds out that her grandmother is dying and leaves the house to search for Haroon. She finds him at his father's house where she begs him to marry her. Shortly after, they both get married and have two kids, one boy and one girl. The couple had started off on a wrong foot when their son Mohammed (Zaid Jabeen) had run away from home that same year. Years later, he appears in front of them both with a woman in his arms. Haroon confronts Mohammed when he finds out that he had fallen in love with a girl from a previous arranged marriage. Haroon's anger is further aggravated when the girl turns out to be the daughter of a local politician. He does not react well to this and runs away with his wife and son. He seemingly forgets about them after leaving home, with Haroon insisting that their child will be looked after by him for the time being. The film later jumps to Nazia (Mehreen Baig) being brought back home by her mother. She remains in a daze at first, thinking that she is about to have a child just like her mother did, but it turns out that her mother gave birth to a girl. Nazia then becomes the center of attention of the town for being the first female to have returned home from "the other side". News of this spreads throughout the town and people come from far away places just to have a glimpse of her. Unware of this attention, she spends most of her time playing with her daughter at home or accompanying her father on his trips. As the film progresses, Nazia has brief flashbacks of her marriage and life with Haroon. These memories are sometimes triggered by her daughter's question on why they don't have a father around. Haroon returns to town one day after being informed of Nazia's return by local goons who had broken into their home looking for him. He tries to rationalize his behavior by accusing his wife for leaving him after the death of their son, an accusation that hurts both her and her mother deeply.
