In retrospect, Fiela's Child is an early success story of a type that can only be described as genre. It is a South African story about a mulatta woman who finds herself pregnant. The story is simple in form and tells a story of the difficulties of life as an African in a small town. We are introduced to the heroine in the first chapter where we read about her life before she met Sihlou, the man who would become her husband. We see her mother, her husband who runs a café, her former lover, an ex-convict who beats up men, her friends and family, and her ex-partner who humiliates her. During the latter part of the book we see her dealing with her pregnancy and the problems of being a young black woman in the 1950s. The story was published in Afrikaans in 1985 and was a best seller.
The book has been translated into many languages and made into two movies.
The story opens with some nostalgia, about an old friend who comes to visit her and tells her that he is now married and pregnant. He asks her if she remembers him? She replies “you look older than I remember”. She then tells him about her life in the past in this small town. She describes the South African cities in the 1950s and the racism that existed at that time. She then remembers a very happy time with a friend from the past. They were going to the concert at night and had just left their parents home. Suddenly they ran into a man they didn’t know. They asked him why he was coming to this music concert. He replied “I’m looking for my wife”. She asked, what did he mean by that? He replied “She’s here with another man.”
The couple had to go back home immediately. She told her friend, “I’m pregnant.” He told her to go to the hospital where a doctor would have a test and a nurse would give her contraceptives to take. In the latter part of the book she is in the hospital getting a test done and how she feels when she is told that she is pregnant. She is depressed but happy because she will soon be the mother of a child. She also has a feeling that this new life of her will not be as difficult as her past life in this town.
